When the diamond trade was introduced to Amsterdam in the 16th century, this city developed into one of the world’s most important diamond centers. During the War more than 2000 Jewish diamond polishers disappeared from Amsterdam into concentration camps in Germany and Poland. After the war the diamond trade was in part returned to its former glory due to the efforts of the diamond merchants and help from abroad.
The most popular diamond shops can be found in Amsterdam such as: Gassan Diamonds, Amsterdam Diamond Center and Coster Diamonds. Many famous diamonds were cut and polished in Amsterdam. For example, the “Cullinan”, the largest diamond ever found. But also the “Koh-I-Noor”, which means Mountain of Light, was cut for the British Crown Jewels in 1852. Furthermore, the world’s smallest diamond, just 0.00012 carat, but with 57 facest, was also cut in Amsterdam.

Nowadays the diamond trade attracts millions of tourists and buyers from around the world. Most diamond polishers as well as diamond traders give demonstrations in diamond cutting.

Museumplein

The Museum quarter is arguably the cultural hub of the city, offering a kaleidoscope of activities and attractions. A stroll down the exclusive P.C. Hooftstraat, Pieter Cornelisz or Van Baerlestraat will take the fashionista into some of the world’s most chic couture houses. :)

From diamonds to leather shoes to designer handbags ;) !!! ;) , just don’t forget to take your credit card! Museum quarter also caters for children or even the child in us with its skateboard – park and wading pool, which in the winter doubles up as an ice rink. Another attraction of the district is Vondelpark where relaxing is the order of the day unless it is Queens Day or Uitmarkt when the park is swarming with hoards of visitors.

Red Disctrict

In the first day of Christmas I went with my Anika on Christmas Organ Concertperformed by Gustav Leonhardt and Bernard Winsemius. I was first time in Nieuwe Kerk and the concert was really great. There was a lot of people, who didn`t buy the tickets as the run out, that`s why I `m glad that I bought it earlier.

Amsterdam holds its modern art market on the Thorbeckeplein. It is running every Sunday from March 19th to the end of October.

The square is the setting for numerous Dutch artists. Visitors can also sit for their own picture via one of the many portrait painters who frequent the area.

If you `ve been in the centre of the city and want to have a cup of really god coffee you should choose Caffe Esprit. You don`t have to wander for a miles.

I don`t recommend it when the weather isn`t good. But, when during the sunny day is realy nice place to stay in for a few minutes to relax and nabrac strenghts for the next part of exploring Amsterdam. What `s great – cups with coffee are really huge comparing with those in other cafeterias. Additionaly, the service is really fast thanks to whizz – bang wireless ordering system.
